alvariation in Arctic sculpins, and the evolution of a ventralsucking disk through various fish families, have been prepared.Many new specimens have been prepared to fill in the series inthe systematic cases. The department preparator, Mr. F. F.Horter, has meanwhile been able to improve greatly his tech-nique for casting alcoholic fishes for exhibition and reproducingtheir fins in celluloid. Besides the routine work required tokeep the study collections in condition for ready reference,thirty study skeletons of various types of fishes have been pre-pared by Mr. Kessler, and arranged for reference. Suchskeletons are constantly being used in the identification ofmaterial referred to the department, and are of service in theColumbia University course which deals with fishes. It ishoped at an early date to increase the present collection of fishskeletons to two or three times its size, and that space will be * Under the Department of Ichthyology and Herpetology (see also pages 188to 190).

Due towar conditions, the department has not attempted to carry onany field work, the most important unworked material receivedbeing from museums in South America, through arrangementsmade by Dr. Eastman when in that country. Progress on Dr. Deans Bibliography of Fishes has beencontinuous, although not as rapid as had been planned, due toexigencies of the war. Mr. Arthur W. Henn,Research who was grouping and annotating the index Publication cards, entered the United States Army early inApril, leaving the work in the hands of Mrs. H.J. Volker, who had assisted him with it prior to that date; andshe has since been occupied with translations, looking up andclassifying references, preparing cards for the press, etc. OnDr. Eastmans return from South America he took up thereferences to fossil fishes until he was called to give his entiretime to his duties at the War Trade Board.
